Mechanical Ventilation in Pulmonary Obstructive Disease

Mechanical Ventilation in Pulmonary Obstructive Disease

Dr Ali Ahani Azari , Anesthesiologist

Abstract:

< 1% of children with status asthmaticus require mechanical ventilation.

Of the children admitted to the PICU, only 5% – 10% require mechanical ventilation.

In status asthmaticus, tracheal intubation is indicated for children following:

-Significant respiratory acidosis un responsive to pharmacotherapy

-Hypoxemia despite pO2<60 on 100 percent oxygen or NPPV

Hypercarbia alone is not an indication for intubation
