Abstract:

Pulmonary sequestration is a tissue that develoed in lung but has no respiratory function.they are more frequent in boys but intra abdominal sequestration is most often found in women.pulmonary sequestration can cause complications such as infection and cancer.it is not connected to the tracheobronchial tree and has own blood source.there are two types of pulmonary sequestrations:

Intrapulmonary: That usually its symptoms appear after adolescence.about two_thirds of Intrapulmonary sequestrations are found in the posterior basal segment of the left lower lobe.its venous drainage is into the pulmonary veins  and.the systemic artery is likely to be large.

Extrapulmonary: That symptoms appear during infancy.they are often between the diaphragm and the lower lobes.

The venous drainage is into the systemic veins such as azygos vein.arterial supply is from systemic vessels (usually descending aorta) and often is small.about 15% of extrapolmunary sequestrations are abdominal.

The cause of pulmonary sequestration is unknown.it is a anomaly of the primitive foregut.

Diagnostic methods can be a CXR, ultrasound,Doppler imaging ,Aortography and CT scan.

Conclusion:pulmonary sequestration is one of the pulmonary abnormality.

The most common treatment is removing by surgery(open or thoracoscopic) or embolization.because of being within the viseral membrane of the lung, intrapulmonary sequestration has more complications.post surgery prognosis is usually good specially in extrapulmonary sequestration.
